Fuel tank on your Maxim too small for the Iron Butt ride? Carlton added an extra gallon to his 650's capacity by grafting the top of a 550 tank to the base of his original.

He cut off the bottom of the 550 tank, and placed it over the 650, lifting the back 3" with the 550 filler neck resting on the 650 tank. He then scribed a line on the 650 tank where they met and cut the top of the 650 tank off 1/2" above the line. The cut ends were flanged and held with temporary aircraft fasteners while they were welded. Basic bodywork finished the job.

Even though the front of the Frankentank is a full inch taller than stock, Carlton figures he could have gone 1" taller still without interfering with the handlebars.
