Barry McMullen devised this home-made valve tool from some scrap aluminium. He uses the camshaft to open the valve, slips this in beside the shim on the lip of the bucket, and rotates the cam lobe out of the way.

Another way is to fold an electrical plastic tie-wrap a couple of times and slide it between the open valve and the seat through the sparkplug hole.
